Top tips for planning an interest holder engagement event

Engagement with individuals who hold a direct interest in your findings is an important aspect of research. This process has been known as ‘stakeholder’ engagement but academics have recently critiqued the use of this language and encouraged more inclusive alternative terms. I have chosen to use the term ‘interest holder’ here.

ATHENA in the Daily Mail – is all publicity good publicity?

Doctors involved in the ATHENA shingles trial were interviewed by the Daily Mail, under the headline ‘Could taking a depression pill prevent lasting agony of shingles? Scientists launch clinical trial to examine effectiveness of treating post-herpetic neuralgia with amitriptyline‘.

We need to recruit more people to take part in this important pain prevention study, so raising awareness is a good thing. But some comments made on the newspaper’s website about the medication (amitriptyline) were unhelpful or wrong.

COVID-19 has caused over 120,000 deaths in the UK, leaving over a million people bereaved. Although death is often described as a societal taboo in British culture, it remains ever-present in the public realm of news and media which COVID-19 has dominated for the past 12 months.
